The second control point was worse.

We reached it a few hours past nightfall – much later than I’d have liked. But the army was high on the victory from earlier and seemed eager for another fight. So we marched on.

Our path ended at a crumbling watchtower perched on a ridge overlooking a valley which was blanketed by snow. It should have been an easier fight than the last since there were only burrow present.

But the swarms were endless.

There were more than I could count.

And my army tired quickly after a day of fighting and marching.

I should have called for us to stop and rest before we got here.

Instead, we cut down burrow for hours.

The moon rose and fell, and the dawn light started to soften the darkness… And still we culled the plague of pests.

My pyroscale used all of her abilities and was only good for stomping and crushing burrows, her blaze trail passive ability melting the snow around her and burning any stupid enough to get that close.

My magmaforged minotaur and all other creatures had, against my better judgement, burned through all of their abilities over the course of the night, hoping desperately to turn the tide.

But the burrow just kept coming.

“Where are they all coming from?” I growled, cleaving through yet another wave.

“It seems like they’re coming out from the watchtower,” Zoey replied. “But they’re multiplying… if we don’t stop them soon, our people are going to fall to exhaustion.”

I nodded.

“We need to get to that watchtower,” I said grimly, assessing the writhing masses of burrow that covered the hundred yards between me and the tower.

“Take Rocky,” Zoey said, already whistling for her nightmare to join her.

The mare stayed out of battle, watching intently from a nearby outcrop rather than risking herself in combat. She was made for flying more than fighting anyway.

Rocky had opted to pry chunks of stone from the rockface beside them and crush the burrow by lobbing it at them. He seemed to be quite enjoying himself but as soon as Zoey’s nightmare leapt off the ledge toward us, he joined her, knowing that was his cue.

“To where can I flap ya on this fine evenin’, mate?” he said, way too casually for the blood-strewn frenzy that surrounded us. I was too tired to respond cheerily so I just pointed to the watchtower and he nodded in understanding.

He grabbed my forearm and threw me up on his stony back, my landing much softer now that I’d practised the move so many more times during our journey to Zardin’s hideout. He flew us as quickly as he could – which was painstakingly slowly – over the battlefield, narrating the scene as he went.

“Look at that dickhead, swingin’ his sword like a right twat! Mate, you’d think he learned to fight in a breeding temple!” He gave a hearty, gravelly laugh.

“Less commentary, more flying, Rocky, please,” I said tiredly.

“Nah, nah, Reg, mate, have a squiz down there! Looks like those burrows are tryna ride each other there’s so many of ‘em.
